Harbottle & Lewis advise Andrew Ritchie on his libel win against The Daily Mirror

Harbottle & Lewis were instructed by Andrew Ritchie to advise him on his dispute with The Daily Mirror.

An article was published on the front page of the 17 April 2006 edition entitled "Harry's Army Chief quits 'over stress'" claiming that Major General Andrew Ritchie had quit as boss of Sandhurst early after the stress of training Princes William and Harry. The article was also published on The Daily Mirror's website. The story was picked up and republished by The Daily Express on 17 April 2006 and by The Times on 20 and 22 April 2006. On 19 April 2006 The Daily Mirror published a letter from a reader which questioned Major General Andrew Ritchie's rank and ability to lead soldiers as a military commander. These allegations were completely untrue. MGN published an apology to Major General Andrew Ritchie in The Daily Mirror on 29 April 2006 and on 4 October 2007 apologised to him in open Court. They have also agreed to pay Major General Andrew Ritchie a substantial sum in damages and his legal costs.

Harbottle & Lewis has also previously secured for Major General Andrew Ritchie from both The Times and The Daily Express the publications of apologies and the reading of statements in open Court as well as the payment of damages and legal costs.
