Broadcasting | Overview

Harbottle & Lewis provides a comprehensive service to broadcasters at a time when the industry is changing rapidly. Digitisation of delivery, broadband access and device proliferation present challenges that our lawyers are well placed to meet, drawing on wide experience not only in linear broadcasting but also in the new network technologies and services. We offer specialist expertise in meeting these new challenges.

Specialist Advice

Our areas of advice include:

  • Television - Our work covers programme provision, distribution and delivery over conventional and new transmission platforms, including mobile and the Internet. We advise mainstream broadcasters on all aspects of their business, including licensing and compliance, transmission, digital switchover, on-demand services, user generated content and rights. We also advise new entrants providing IPTV and other on-demand services, search engines and new means of monetising programme services over new network platforms.
  • Radio - We act for a range of clients in the radio industry, advising on broadcast licensing and regulatory issues, transmission, carriage and convergence as well as full litigation, corporate and commercial support.
  • New Platforms - Much of our work concerns the technologies that underpin the rapid spread of broadband access, both fixed and mobile, the new business opportunities that they create and the effects of regulation, including the AVMS and e-Commerce Directives. We advise clients delivering mainstream linear and on-demand programming over digital platforms and those exploiting new applications to deliver or share content, voice or data in new and different ways. We have cutting edge experience in delivering content services over new platforms, both fixed and mobile, and in planning for next generation access.
  • Telecommunications - Our lawyers offer specialist advice in the regulation of electronic communications networks and services, particularly under the European regulatory framework and its implementation in the UK under the Communications Act. They also have wide experience of acquiring, coordinating and exploiting access to the radio frequency spectrum, for both terrestrial and satellite applications. Our team provides full service support for companies in this sector, drawing on wide experience in advising major fixed and mobile operators, as well as advising media companies on infrastructure and platform issues as these industries converge.
  • Space - We have a wide experience of advising operators of satellite systems providing television distribution services in the fixed and broadcasting satellite bands.
