Harbottle & Lewis provides a comprehensive service to television and radio broadcasters at a time when the industry is changing rapidly. Digitalisation of delivery and broadband access present a wide range of challenges that our lawyers are well placed to meet, drawing on experience not only in linear analogue broadcasting but also in the new network and service technologies. They offer specialist expertise in meeting these new challenges.

Television

Our work covers programme provision over conventional and new transmission platforms, including mobile and the Internet. It includes licensing issues under the Broadcasting Acts and compliance issues under the Communications Act, particularly with respect to new network platforms and associated facilities. It extends to new means of monetising programme services including interactive games and voting, red button facilities, catch-up television and Internet television.

Radio

The Group acts for a range of clients in the radio broadcasting industries, advising on broadcasting licensing and regulatory issues, transmission, carriage, convergence, litigation and corporate and providing commercial advice for radio stations.

New Platforms

The Group offers experience in delivering conventional programme services over new platforms, such as DSL and mobile, as well as launching new services on mobile and the Internet.

Telecommunications

The Group offers specialist advice in the regulation of electronic communications networks and services, particularly in connection with the new European regulatory framework and its implementation in the UK under the Communications Act. The Group also provides full service support for companies in this sector, drawing on wide experience in advising major fixed and mobile operators.
