People | Tony Ballard
Tony is head of the Broadcasting Group and he also works closely with the eCommerce and Technology and the Film and Television Groups.
He is a prominent figure in communications law with extensive experience in the provision of electronic communication networks and the distribution of content over them. He has particular expertise in digital media and broadcasting; telecommunications; spectrum management; and copyright. Tony's clients include major television broadcasters, fixed and mobile telecommunications operators, film producers and distributors, government bodies and other organisations.
He wrote the chapter on Broadcasting in Oxford University Press' new textbook "Media Law and Practice" (2009) and the chapter on mobile in Oceana's textbook "Electronic Communications: the New EU Framework" (2002). He is a member of the Royal Television Society, an arbitrator on the international panel of the Independent Film & Television Alliance and chairman of the UK branch of the European Centre for Space Law. He is also a regular contributor to the Digital Media Law Blog.
Tony is a graduate of Churchill College, Cambridge and qualified in 1974. He joined Harbottle & Lewis in 2007 having previously been a partner at Field Fisher Waterhouse and, earlier, at Allison & Humphreys.
