Tevez: The Neverending Transfer Story

In another extraordinary turn in the Carlos Tevez saga, Sheffield United is now understood to have initiated proceedings against West Ham for "breaches of contract". The Blades are seeking damages worth up to £50m from the Hammers, which they estimate as the possible cost of their relegation from the Premier League. It is understood that Sheffield United has evidence which proves that West Ham "misled" the original arbitration panel by failing to disclose vital information relating to their arrangement with Tevez's advisor, Kia Joorabchian, and that the Premier League would not have registered those players with West Ham had it known the true position. However Eggert Magnusson has stated publicly that he is willing to counter-sue Sheffield United to protect West Ham's reputation if it becomes necessary.

West Ham was fined £5.5m by the Premier League over the Tevez affair in April. It is understood that West Ham's main offences were that it was in breach of its 'good faith' requirement under Premier League rules and that the arrangements to bring Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano to the club were also in breach of those rules which prohibit clubs from signing contracts which could enable another party to 'materially influence' the selection or performance of teams. Sheffield United believes that West Ham should have been docked points for such serious breaches of the rules but recently failed in its High Court bid to force a fresh inquiry. The club turned to the High Court after an independent panel rejected their claim.
