Harbottle & Lewis’ Gary Ashford appointed Vice President of CIOT

18 November 2020

Gary Ashford, Tax partner at Harbottle & Lewis, has been appointed to serve as the new Vice President for the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT), from 17 November 2020.

Gary is a long-standing Council Member of the CIOT. Prior to his role on the Council he was previously Chairman of the CIOT Management of Taxes sub-committee. Gary also represents the CIOT within CFE Tax Advisers Europe (which represents 250,000 advisers in the European continent), where he sits as Vice President. He will continue this role within CFE, as part of his work with the CIOT.

A well-known international tax partner, Gary regularly leads for the tax profession in tax consultations with HMRC and the Treasury. He is also an author of the Serious Tax Investigations and International Tax Investigations for Bloomsbury Publishing, and is a regular lecturer on international tax matters.

Gary has particular expertise in international and contentious tax matters. He advises private clients, trusts and corporate entities on a range of complex tax issues such as restructuring, residence, non-domicile/remittances, transfer pricing matters, employment and property tax.

Gary said: “It is an honour to take on the role of Vice President of the CIOT, at a time of great significance for tax advisers. It is an important time, as the digital economy changes the face of business and professional services. As a Firm with significant expertise in technology, my role within Harbottle & Lewis provides me with good insight into these matters.

“I am particularly interested in the post-COVID recovery, and what I believe will be the development of new green taxes. There is lots to do!”

Gary is part of Harbottle & Lewis’ highly respected Private Client & Tax team, operating within the wider Private Capital group. This news follows the recent arrival of Zoë Camp and her team who joined the Private Capital Group from New Quadrant Partners in October 2020 and followed the hires of Sofie Hoffman (Partner), Marianne Kafenna (Partner) and Morag Ofili (Senior Associate) who all joined the Firm this year.
