The Editors’ Code of Practice Committee has announced an amendment to Clause 2 (Privacy) of the Editors’ Code, which is enforced by IPSO.
The amendment clarifies that mental health is an element of a person’s life that media organisations must respect in their coverage. The Committee Chair explained that this change reflected the already implicit inclusion of mental health in the current wording, but also recognised the growing acknowledgement of the subject’s importance to society at large.
The amendment is expected to be of assistance to anyone objecting to intrusive or objectionable coverage of their mental health in the press, and comes into force on 1 January 2021.
