The charities sector continues to face significant public scrutiny, with charities having to navigate issues around formation, grants and governance, fundraising and disputes, often in the glare of the public eye.
We are highly experienced in charity law and are long-standing advisors to various leading arts charities, which is the origin of our practice. Our offering has significantly expanded in recent years as we continue to advise new, innovative charities and not-for-profits.
We advise, among others, corporate foundations, media-related fundraising charities, subsidised arts organisations and high net worth individuals on their personal philanthropy and charitable interests. We have a deep understanding of the unique challenges and needs of charities, partly due to several of our team being trustees and board advisors to charities. We understand that charities need to be run and advised as businesses, and our charity clients particularly value the pragmatic and commercial approach we take on complex charity regulatory issues.
Our corporate expertise in the charity sector means we are well placed to advise charities on mergers, reorganisations, innovative funding and investment models. We have advised theatres and membership organisations on both the corporate and governance aspects of corporate re-structuring.
We also advise charities on leveraging their brand and protecting their reputation in the media spotlight. With so many good causes competing for public support, charities are increasingly adopting strategies from the advertising and marketing sector in order to stand out. Our entertainment, media and technology sector expertise combined with our experience advising not-for-profits means we are uniquely positioned to advise clients on using new technologies whilst maintaining their values and complying with charity law.
We are active members of the Charity Law Association (CLA). We have been involved in the CLA’s working policies and previously advised on the Code of Fundraising Practice.
